Derbyshire County Council reopened the A54 Cat and Fiddle road on Monday 12 October, nearly three weeks ahead of the planned date. The road had been closed to all traffic since 27 July as part of phase one of a £3 million repair and safety programme.

The closure, initially scheduled to last until 30 October, was shortened after crews worked continuously during days and nights to complete the work. The council says a second full closure will take place in spring 2027 for phase two, expected to last about 11 weeks. The exact dates have yet to be confirmed.

Rebuilding foundations and improving drainage

The Cat and Fiddle route, which includes the A54 Macclesfield Main Road on the Derbyshire side, connects Buxton and Macclesfield alongside the A537. It is an exposed moorland road known for steep gradients and poor weather, conditions that have caused earth banks above the carriageway to slip onto the road.

Derbyshire County Council attributes the damage to increasingly extreme weather and inadequate road drainage. This summer's closure allowed major excavations across the full road width. Phase one work involved rebuilding sections of road foundations and improving measures to manage surface water flooding.

New road markings, reflective road studs, kerbs and repaired signs were also installed. According to the council, the foundations and drainage matter most on this route. Trapped water soaks into the layers below the surface, causing rapid deterioration especially on exposed moorland.

Phase two addresses earth bank stability and safety barriers

The second phase will focus on reinforcing the hillside earth banks to reduce the risk of soil and rock falling onto the road. It will also include installing new safety barriers and bike guards, repairing existing ones, replacing drainage culverts beneath the road, and completing surfacing toward the A53 junction.

The council plans to put in place a signed diversion route again using the A53, A523, A537 and A54.

Early reopening thanks to careful planning

Councillor Charlotte Hill, cabinet member for highways at Derbyshire County Council, said: "We know how important the Cat and Fiddle route is to residents, businesses and people travelling between Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire, so we are very pleased to be reopening it three weeks earlier than planned."

She added that finishing ahead of schedule was a result of careful planning and sustained work throughout the programme.

Looking ahead to spring work and winter use

The council has not disclosed the contractor or the cost split between the two phases of the £3 million programme. It said it will provide clear details on dates and arrangements for the spring closure as soon as they are confirmed.

For drivers and motorcyclists who favour the route, the Cat and Fiddle is open for winter use. However, users should expect a full closure again once weather conditions improve in spring.
