The A1 northbound closes overnight between the A47 Wansford junction and Wothorpe junction from 8pm to 6am on weeknights starting 1 October. The closures continue until around mid-December.
The work covers resurfacing the carriageway, installing new road markings, traffic signal sensors, road studs and updated signage. National Highways is delivering the project in phases rather than a single continuous closure.
Phased approach keeps work coordinated
This section of the A1 near Stamford already saw closures for five nights last month linked to separate safety improvements. The current phase is longer at ten weeks and covers a broader scope of roadworks.
National Highways stresses the phased programme allows coordination with other planned works on the A1 in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. Managing overlapping schemes helps avoid clashes that would increase delay and complexity.
Set diversion route for overnight closures
Drivers should follow the prescribed diversion rather than rely on sat-nav. Traffic diverts westbound along the A47 from Wansford, then south along the A43 at Duddington, rejoining the A1 at Wothorpe.
The diverted route is longer than the closed stretch but can safely accommodate the volume and type of traffic affected. This is typical for strategic A-road diversions, which prioritise capacity and safety over shortest distance.
Night closures for safety and efficiency
Overnight working is standard for major resurfacing and road marking tasks. Restricting work to 8pm–6am avoids the wider traffic delays that daytime closures cause on this strategic route. It also improves safety by eliminating live traffic near work crews.
National Highways notes that the mid-December completion is an estimate. Weather conditions, particularly cold or wet weather, can delay resurfacing tasks that need suitable temperatures to bond and cure properly.
Drivers planning journeys through the area should expect the potential for adjustments to the programme. Advance notice of significant changes to traffic management will be provided as the project progresses.
