Rocky Lane Culvert has been restored after extensive deterioration, with vegetation cleared, brickwork repaired and a protective coating applied. The project required specialist access and safety measures, including confined-space rescue teams on standby throughout the works.

De-vegetation and condition assessment

Thomson Protective Coatings began by removing overgrowth and accumulated vegetation around the culvert. Clearing the site enabled a full assessment of its condition and safe access for repair works. Vegetation had contributed to the culvert’s declining state, alongside damaged brickwork and joint deterioration.

Confined space safety measures

Working within the culvert demanded careful planning and specialist safety. Dedicated Confined Space Rescue Operatives and equipment were deployed, ensuring the team could operate securely in the restricted environment. This approach aligned with UK standards for health and safety in confined spaces.

Brick and joint repairs restore structure

The refurbishment included extensive brick and joint repairs to stabilise and restore degraded masonry. Mechanical surface preparation was completed to ST3 standard, ensuring suitable conditions for repairs and coating application. The project also featured fabrication and installation of access ladders to improve inspection and maintenance access within the culvert.

Series 5000 protective coating

With structural repairs complete and surfaces prepared, a Highways-approved Series 5000 protective coating system was applied. This coating guards the structure against the environmental effects it will face during operation, such as moisture and chemical exposure, thereby extending its service life.

Improving resilience of UK infrastructure

The completed works have transformed Rocky Lane Culvert from a deteriorated asset into a restored and protected structure. This refurbishment supports the resilience of the local infrastructure network, reducing risk of failure and maintenance demands.

Delivering such specialist projects requires technical expertise, detailed planning, suitable equipment and adaptive teams. Thomson Protective Coatings combined these elements to safely and efficiently complete the programme despite the confined and challenging environment.

The company credits the project team’s professionalism and commitment to safety and quality as vital to success. The project demonstrates the capability needed to maintain and extend the life of critical UK infrastructure assets through targeted refurbishment and protective coatings.
