Two new slip roads opened on 12 October at M27 Junction 10, near Fareham, allowing drivers to join the westbound carriageway and leave eastbound for the first time.

Until now, the junction only permitted westbound exits and eastbound entries. The new eastbound off-slip and westbound on-slip complete the junction’s connections in all directions.

All moves now possible

The original Junction 10 was a half junction. Traffic could only leave the M27 heading west and join it heading east. The new slip roads deliver what engineers call an "all-moves" junction, linking the A32 and A3222 with the motorway both ways.

This phase follows the opening of the westbound off-slip, motorway underpass and four roundabouts on 14 September. The next stage will be a new lane for the eastbound on-slip, scheduled for early winter 2026.

Infrastructure for Welborne Garden Village

Hampshire County Council leads the £100 million-plus scheme, supported by National Highways. The main contractor is VolkerFitzpatrick.

The junction provides critical infrastructure for Welborne Garden Village to the north of Fareham. This development plans up to 6,000 homes, schools, community facilities and employment space.

Temporary limits remain until early 2027

Temporary speed limits and lane restrictions between Junctions 9 and 11 remain in place until early 2027. National Highways uses this time for safety work and technology testing.

Andrew Jackson, programme manager at National Highways, said: "Opening these new slip roads is a key milestone in our aim to deliver smoother, safer journeys, and we continue to work closely with Hampshire County Council to support this project."

What drivers need to know

The upgrade allows all turning movements at the junction for the first time. About 30,000 vehicles a day are expected to use the junction once complete. However, restrictions on the motorway approaching and leaving Junction 10 remain for several months.

Councillor Steve Forster, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Lead for Highways and Passenger Transport, said: "Our teams are continuing to work hard to finish all elements of the Junction 10 scheme, having opened the first phase in September, and I am pleased to confirm more road space will be operational on Monday 12 October."
