Alan Turing Way remains closed five months after sinkhole discovery

A sinkhole beneath Alan Turing Way in Manchester has kept the northbound carriageway closed since March. Specialist engineers continue underground probes to plan a safe, lasting repair.

More than five months after a sinkhole appeared beneath Alan Turing Way, the northbound carriageway remains closed with no confirmed reopening date. The closed section runs between Ashton Old Road and Grey Mare Lane.

6.4m by 6.3m, six metres deep void

The excavation at the site measures approximately 6.4 metres by 6.3 metres and extends around six metres below the road surface, according to Manchester City Council. Engineers are working to understand the full extent and cause of the void.

Specialist contractors have drilled as deep as 50 metres beneath the road to map the underlying ground conditions. The council says this thorough investigatory work is essential before deciding on a permanent repair.

More than surface repairs needed

The council emphasises that simply filling the hole and resurfacing will not address the problem. Understanding the underground conditions is key to developing a durable solution that prevents further subsidence.

Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin, executive member for clean air, environment and transport, said: “The void has presented a complex set of challenges both for investigation and planning a safe, lasting repair. We are working with specialist contractors to design a solution that prevents similar events in future.”

Long closure impacts local journeys

The northbound closure affects traffic flow on a busy east Manchester route. Local resident David Carey said a journey that normally takes around 20 minutes has extended to over an hour due to congestion and diversions.

While the council acknowledges the disruption, it has not provided a timetable for completing investigations or reopening the carriageway.

Uncertainty beneath the carriageway

The ongoing investigation highlights challenges for highways teams when failures occur below the surface. Without a clear picture of the void’s nature and extent, planning reliable repair programmes is difficult.

Solutions must address the root cause beneath the carriageway rather than only restoring the road surface. Prolonged closures also increase pressure on authorities to communicate progress to residents and road users.

This situation is not unique to emergencies. Planned works on major routes such as the M1 between junctions 11a and 13 have faced similar frustration when schedules change or closures extend beyond expectations.

Focus on safety and durable repair

Alan Turing Way remains closed while engineers prioritise ground investigations and design work. The aim is to reopen the route once a permanent repair is in place that ensures public safety and prevents future problems.

For now, the site remains a work in progress rather than a completed repair scheme.
