Alexandra Dock bridge on the A180 will close overnight for eight nights from 19 October. Gilbey Bridge will close for two nights. These are the last of the overnight shutdowns needed to complete structural repairs on the main routes into Grimsby.

The closures run from 8pm to around 5am the following morning. They allow final road lining, installation of a new central reservation barrier and drain inspections.

Eight minutes, two cones

Road lining involves repainting lane lines, edge lines and arrows that direct drivers across the bridge and at Westgate roundabout. This is essential to ensure safe lane discipline and clear guidance after the roadworks.

The existing central barrier on Alexandra Dock bridge will be replaced with a new safety barrier on the central reservation. This requires closing lane 2, the lane adjacent to the central reservation, in both directions from 19 October.

Gilbey Bridge will be subject to CCTV drain surveys. These inspections check if water can drain freely from the bridge deck, which is critical in preventing water damage that can reduce the lifespan of bridge structures.

Closing times and routes

Both bridges close overnight on Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 October. Alexandra Dock bridge remains closed overnight for the rest of that week until early Saturday 23 October, and then again on 26, 27 and 28 October.

Diversions for Alexandra Dock bridge closures route traffic via Grimsby town centre. For Gilbey Bridge closures, traffic is diverted along Moody Lane.

The council advises drivers to follow on-site traffic management and signage throughout the works.

Final phase of vital repairs

North East Lincolnshire Council says the works are nearing completion. The repairs are described as vital to maintaining the A180 bridges that link Grimsby, Cleethorpes and surrounding areas.

The council has not disclosed the contract value, the contractor’s name, or when the lane closures on Alexandra Dock bridge will fully lift.

These closures follow an extended contraflow on the A180 during resurfacing work in September.
