Resurfacing on the A69 Warwick Road in Carlisle starts on Sunday 18 October 2026. Work runs overnight and in the evenings to keep disruption low during busy daytime periods.

Cumberland Council is replacing the worn carriageway surface between the Tesco junction and Tilbury Road. The scheme runs in two phases, allowing safe, efficient work alongside traffic management.

Two phases, evening and night work

The first phase begins on Sunday 18 October with four-way temporary traffic signals at the Tesco junction. The signals operate from 4.30pm until 1am while resurfacing takes place.

From Monday 19 to Friday 23 October, the council closes the road between Montgomery Way and Tilbury Road from 7pm to 1am. Signed diversions are in place for all vehicles during these closures.

Traffic management and diversions

HGVs are diverted via the M6 and A6 London Road. Local traffic uses Montgomery Way and Durranhill Road to navigate around the closures.

The council aims to remove traffic management by 3am each morning to allow material curing and site clearance before reopening the road.

Maintaining access and safety

Access for emergency vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists on foot or bicycle is maintained throughout the works.

Access to the Toby Carvery is maintained and clearly signed. Residents in the work area requiring access are asked to speak to site staff on site.

Resurfacing benefits and council context

The resurfacing replaces a worn surface layer rather than patching individual defects. This improves road condition and extends the carriageway’s life.

The council’s ongoing highway maintenance programme includes this work as part of wider investment across the area’s roads. Details of Cumberland’s wider highways spending are available separately.

Plan ahead

Evening drivers, HGV operators and residents near the A69 works should plan for the overnight closures from 19 to 23 October.
