Traffic signals change on time. Street lights remain on all night. Vehicle detectors in the road surface pick up waiting cars without fail. These are small moments paid little attention by drivers but critical to traffic flow and safety. They depend on complex systems beneath the surface.
Equans has purchased Mway Communications, a specialist in highways technology serving UK roads. The acquisition covers six areas: technology deployment, electrical engineering, street lighting, traffic signals, inductive loop installation, and highways civils. Together they form the core infrastructure that keeps local roads functioning daily.
Six systems working in sync
Mway Communications’ expertise operates well beyond what drivers see at 30mph. It includes cables, feeder pillars, detection equipment, ducting and power supplies supporting traffic signals and road lighting.
Inductive loops, for example, are wire coils embedded in the carriageway. They detect the presence of vehicles by sensing changes in electromagnetic fields. These loops trigger signal changes but remain invisible to the public eye.
Highways civils covers the groundwork. Excavations, reinstatements, duct installations and bases all enable technology to function in the road environment. This kind of work often overlaps electrical systems and highway construction disciplines.
Where it fits on UK roads
Urban roads typically carry an increasing number of interdependent roadside technologies. Junctions combine signals and detection loops, street lighting connects with sensing equipment, and all need to work together reliably.
Maintaining and installing these assets is a daily task for local authorities and contractors. Small faults in a cabinet or damaged detector loops can disrupt signal timings, extend queues and frustrate drivers.
Equans’ acquisition enhances its ability to manage this combined technology and civils workload, serving authorities working under UK regulations such as the Traffic Management Act and NRSWA. It equips the company to respond efficiently to maintenance or upgrade contracts requiring multiple disciplines within constrained urban footprints.
What changes for clients and road users
Bringing six roadside systems under one roof reduces project handovers. It avoids interface problems common when different contractors handle signals, lighting, and civils separately.
This integration creates fewer opportunities for delays and finger-pointing when equipment fails or commissioning is late. It also means less public disruption, since roads can resume normal function faster.
Traditional highways spending focused on visible construction such as resurfacing and kerbing. That remains important. However, modern networks also depend on digital and powered infrastructure merging physically within the same street trenches.
Having one contractor deliver and maintain this layered infrastructure across technology and civils simplifies the supply chain and, in turn, daily urban road operation.
Although Equans did not reveal the acquisition’s financial details when announced on 18 August 2026, the deal clearly strengthens its position in UK roadside systems where performance is measured by how little the public has to notice the work.
