A worker was crushed in a waste yard where vehicles and pedestrians shared the same space without clear control. The incident led to a £300,000 fine for an Essex waste and recycling company after traffic management shortcomings were found to be the cause.
The penalty was reported on 1 September 2026 and draws attention to risks that extend far beyond one depot gate.
Basic separation saves lives
On highways, traffic management often means cones, lane closures and temporary lights. In operational yards, it means clear rules on who moves where, who gives way, and where pedestrians can walk safely. Without these, the risk of collision rises sharply.
In waste and recycling yards, large reversing vehicles navigate tight spaces cluttered with loads, skips and stockpiles. Noise and limited sightlines increase danger. Workers carrying out routine checks or giving direction are especially vulnerable if no protected pedestrian routes exist.
One blind spot, one unclear route
The core principle of traffic management in yards is to separate vehicles from people wherever possible. If they must cross paths, crossings should be controlled, highly visible and brief.
