North Yorkshire Council has launched a legal challenge against the government's decision on road funding allocations, arguing that the current formula fails to account for the county's extensive rural road network and the severe impacts of recent weather events.
The council, which maintains over 5,600 miles of roads — the largest network of any local authority in England — says it has been consistently underfunded compared to urban areas despite facing unique challenges including harsh winter conditions and flooding.
Council leader Carl Les said: "We have no choice but to challenge this decision. Our residents depend on safe, well-maintained roads, and the current funding formula simply does not reflect the reality of maintaining such an extensive network in a rural area."
The legal challenge focuses on the methodology used to calculate road maintenance funding, which the council claims disproportionately favours urban authorities with shorter, more densely populated road networks.
