The heat from a wildfire in the New Forest has damaged approximately 1km of the A31 dual carriageway so severely that National Highways must rebuild the carriageway rather than simply patch it.

Originally expected to reopen midweek, the closure now extends until the weekend as engineers assess and repair the damage beneath the road surface.

Beyond surface damage
