The Cairngorms now have a Variable Message Sign (VMS) that delivers real-time information to visitors within seconds. Previously, warning travellers of sudden high winds or facility closures was slower and less precise.
Coeval Limited designed and installed the LED VMS to improve communication on Cairngorm Mountain. The sign provides clear updates on conditions affecting the railway and snowsports, helping visitors make safer decisions before reaching the site.
High-brightness LEDs for low visibility
The system uses a high-brightness LED display with multiple lines of messaging. This makes text readable in challenging weather such as fog, snow or low light—common on the mountain. A weather-resistant enclosure protects the sign from frost, ice and wind.
Staff can update messages remotely. This speeds up communication and cuts the need for site visits, which can be difficult in this remote, upland location.
Purpose-built for harsh conditions
The Cairngorms present a tough environment for infrastructure with frequent high winds, snow and temperatures often below freezing. Despite this, the VMS continues to operate reliably, delivering instant information to changing visitor numbers throughout the year.
The signage alerts to hazardous weather, service closures, and operational updates for mountain railway and snowsports activities. This real-time information reduces the risk of accidents caused by unexpected conditions.
Improving safety and visitor experience
The new sign improves safety by offering immediate warnings of danger, helping prevent unsafe travel. Visitors receive up-to-date information that reduces uncertainty and frustration before arriving.
For operations teams, remote messaging updates improve efficiency and reduce manual work. The system supports better traffic and visitor management on a site known for rapidly changing weather.
Real-world reliability on UK upland roads
By combining durable hardware with flexible message control, this signage meets the safety-critical needs of an exposed site. It offers a practical communication tool for local authorities and contractors needing to provide swift, clear instructions in challenging outdoor environments.
