WDM and Dr Helen Viner present a webinar on 21 April focusing on data-led skid resistance strategies that enhance safety beyond current compliance requirements.

Dr Helen Viner, who started at the Transport Research Laboratory in the 1990s, leads the LASR methodology. She highlights the link between friction levels, collision risk, and early-life skid resistance. Her work influences UK standards updates and European research collaboration.

Her approach helps councils focus resources where they have most impact, working within financial constraints to reduce accidents.

Principles of quality data

Mark Stephenson, WDM’s Director of Consultancy, emphasises the role of accurate and accredited data in managing skid resistance. A Chartered Civil Engineer with 35 years’ experience, Stephenson shares lessons from New Zealand, where data-driven strategies reportedly prevented over 700 deaths and serious injuries in two decades.

He covers data collection principles, validation, quality assurance, and shares insights from Transport Scotland’s practices.

Lessons from US pavement friction monitoring

Ryland Potter, Vice President at WDM USA, describes continuous pavement friction monitoring using SCRIM® technology.

She explains how the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet combines this data with Safety Performance Functions to target high-risk sites, improve treatment plans, and reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.

Potter also chairs the High Friction Surface Treatment Council at the American Traffic Safety Services Association and contributes to national transportation research.
