Roadworkers face daily threats ranging from verbal abuse to vehicles driven deliberately towards crews. At Highways UK on 15 October, the sector outlines a collective response to these risks and offers a chance to support safety improvements.
Big Thinking Theatre session outlines new industry collaboration
The session, chaired by Neil Levett, Director of No Excuse for Roadworker Abuse (NEFRA), takes place at 11.40 on 15 October. It features senior representatives from Balfour Beatty, Kier, LCRIG, National Highways and the NEFRA campaign. Speakers will explain how different organisations are working together to tackle abuse, physical assault and dangerous driving aimed at road crews.
Shared resources aim for consistent safety messaging
Before Roadworker Safety Week from 16–20 November, contractors including Balfour Beatty, Kier, Costain, WSP and Galliford Try have combined their guidance into a single presentation. This will support National Highways’ Supply Chain Safety Leadership Group by promoting a consistent safety message across the supply chain.
Visitors can find these materials at stand D2A during Highways UK and are invited to sign the Highways UK pledge for 2026. This demonstrates commitment to reducing roadworker abuse across the sector.
RAISE app helps build the UK’s first national roadworker abuse dataset
NEFRA operates as a not-for-profit body that encourages data sharing on incidents through the RAISE reporting app. The aim is to develop a single dataset covering abuse and incursions both on the Strategic Road Network and local roads.
The data will support planning future works and identifying risk factors. Organisations contributing information include National Highways, LCRIG on behalf of local authorities, HAUC/Street Works UK, CECA and contractors.
Collaborative approach prioritises the safety of all roadworkers
By sharing incident data across clients, contractors and supply chains, NEFRA promotes a united strategy. This prioritises the protection of colleagues working on all schemes regardless of employer or project.
Visitors to stand D2A can meet NEFRA Directors and learn how the industry is joining forces to improve safety. The Big Thinking Theatre session offers a forum for discussion on the shared approach to tackling roadworker abuse.
