Running temporary highway safety equipment without a mains connection is now faster and cleaner. ECO-GEN HVO powers remote sites at a cost lower than cabling while reducing backup generator carbon emissions by 90%.
Developed by P&D Specialist Services and offered through SG, the ECO-GEN HVO system integrates solar panels, sodium battery storage and a backup generator fuelled by hydrotreated vegetable oil, known as HVO. This fuel is recycled and produces significantly fewer emissions than traditional diesel.
Solar and sodium batteries deliver peak power
Solar generation provides most of the site’s energy. Sodium-ion batteries store surplus power and support demand fluctuations. Sodium technology avoids lithium or cobalt, materials with complex mining and supply issues. It performs well in cold UK conditions and has a lower fire risk than lithium alternatives.
The HVO generator supplies backup power when solar and battery reserves run low. Operators benefit from a system that combines renewable energy and cleaner fuel, maintaining reliability without reliance on diesel.
Lower cost and less disruption than mains cabling
Without the need for cable runs or civil works, ECO-GEN HVO typically costs less than a permanent mains connection. It arrives on site as a complete unit, ready to operate, eliminating the planning and delays necessary for cabling projects.
Remote monitoring cuts site visits
The system tracks solar output, battery charge, fuel level and generator performance remotely. Maintenance visits are scheduled based on actual use, extending intervals up to 24 months. This reduces disruption and operational costs for contractors and councils.
Designed for UK highways and infrastructure
ECO-GEN HVO is suitable for highways safety equipment and 24-hour CCTV where continuous data transfer via 4G or 5G networks is essential. It fits remote or temporary locations across the UK road network, including motorways, A-roads and local authority sites without mains power.
Simon Waterfall, Technical Director at P&D Specialist Services, said: “Most sites we power lack mains supply nearby. Solar covers most needs, but you need reliable backup. Using HVO instead of diesel gets emissions down by 90%. Remote monitoring means we only visit sites when needed, improving reliability and cutting maintenance.”
Try it at Highways UK
ECO-GEN HVO will be on display at Highways UK, NEC Birmingham, 14–15 October, on stand F25. Visitors can discuss powering their sites without mains cables and explore the system’s capabilities.
