Mobile carriageway closures now get a safety upgrade with King Highway’s Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure (EMCC) vehicles. They alert operatives instantly if an unauthorised vehicle breaches the closure, reducing the risk of accidents in high-risk work zones.

Instant alerts and camera enforcement

The vehicles use advanced digital technology developed alongside Race Technology. The system connects the work area to upstream EMCC vehicles carrying out rolling block traffic management, maintaining a live link across the closure.

ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras, approved for police use, record every vehicle passing through. Should a vehicle enter the closure unlawfully, the system immediately notifies teams inside the vehicle and on site.

This evidence supports successful prosecutions and allows the vehicles to function as camera enforcement vans when paired with the standard rear sign face.

Built for UK traffic management conditions

King Highway’s system meets the GG117 operational standard. It has dual SIM connectivity, linking to two mobile networks simultaneously to maintain uninterrupted communication even in poor coverage areas.

Operators use a cab-mounted interface with a simple menu system to monitor the closure status and respond quickly. An emergency alarm can broadcast warnings instantly to connected devices around the site.

Optional wearable alarms carry licence-free radio signals to provide additional warnings directly to operatives working within the closure.

Flexible system scales with site needs

The EMCC solution can connect and manage up to 16 units, allowing use over large or complex roadworks. System data and incident records are available through an online portal, with court-approved software to review any breaches.

The technology is housed in a rugged enclosure made for the traffic management sector. Internal batteries provide up to 84 hours on standby or 20 hours of continuous operation. External power can also be used to extend deployment times.

Short-term hire accelerates adoption

To widen access, King Highway offers EMCC vehicles through its rental division, King Rental, on a daily hire basis. This model allows traffic management providers to trial the technology without upfront investment in purchase.
