A roundabout accessible for wheelchair users in a Shropshire playground has been replaced with a modern design that sits flush to the ground. The original equipment had been out of use after 22 years.
National Highways provided £10,000 towards the £13,014 cost as part of its Community Legacy Fund. The remainder came from Bayston Hill Parish Council. The donation followed road surface improvements completed earlier this year on the nearby A49 between Bayston Hill and Condover.
New design for inclusive play
The new roundabout at Longmeadow playground in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury, is suitable for children of all abilities, including wheelchair users. Its flush-to-ground setup ensures easy access for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The previous roundabout was one of the few pieces of play equipment accessible to children with disabilities. Its loss had been keenly felt within the community.
Community investment after roadworks disruption
Joe Walmsley, National Highways Route Manager, said the A49 works had caused disruption to local residents. This contribution was intended to give something back to the community.
"It was fantastic to see the new roundabout officially opened and to watch children of all abilities enjoying it together," he said. "This is a space that means a lot to this community, and we’re pleased to have played a part in bringing it back to life."
Local impact and future use
Bayston Hill Parish Council manages Longmeadow playground, a popular area for local families and visitors. Councillor Rob Ruscoe, chairman of the council, welcomed the replacement.
"We were delighted to receive funding to replace our 22-year-old roundabout that had stopped rotating," he said. "The new equipment’s design allows easy access and we hope many generations will continue to enjoy the playground."
Councillor Teri Trickett of Shropshire Council noted the significance of the investment in a community affected by the National Highways network. She described the project as a positive example of collaborative working.
Support through Community Legacy Fund
National Highways’ Community Legacy Fund awards grants from £500 to £10,000 to non-profit groups and charities. It supports projects near major roadworks that improve community wellbeing, the environment, economic prosperity, or inclusion.
This approach aligns with National Highways’ commitment to delivering social value through its road schemes.
