The new Kex Gill bypass has opened on the A59 in North Yorkshire, removing traffic from a stretch of road repeatedly closed by landslips on the original hillside route. The 3.9-mile diversion offers a more stable alignment that avoids ongoing slope instability.

Moving the road, not patching the hill

Landslips at Kex Gill have caused frequent closures and extended diversions. The original road alignment could not be maintained through routine repairs. Resurfacing fixes the surface, but cannot stabilise a moving hillside.

North Yorkshire Council decided to build a new bypass rather than continually patching an unstable slope. The new 3.9-mile section moves the carriageway away from ground that was shifting beneath it. This marks a shift from reactive maintenance to civil engineering.

Keeping the A59 reliable across North Yorkshire

The A59 is a key east–west route carrying daily commuters, freight and visitors. Closures forced long diversions onto minor roads not built for heavy traffic. That extended journey times, disrupted bus services and affected emergency responses.

Unlike bypasses that divert traffic around communities, the Kex Gill bypass preserves a strategic route by avoiding the unstable hillside. North Yorkshire Council said the scheme would bring major benefits to county communities by restoring a dependable highway link.

Interruptions that train drivers not to trust the road

Repeated closures on the old Kex Gill stretch trained drivers to expect disruption. The bypass offers both an engineering and a confidence boost for users. It reduces the risk of landslip closures and provides a route less exposed to environmental damage.

The project highlights the limits of reactive highway maintenance on geotechnical problems. A slope that keeps moving calls for a new road line, more design and additional land, rather than continuing repair cycles.

Resilience amid increasing climate pressures

Wetter winters, intense rainfall and aging infrastructure increase the strain on highways networks. The Kex Gill bypass is a response to this evolving resilience challenge. By relocating the route, the scheme targets a known weak point on a busy artery.

The new road alignment should reduce future closures, providing a more reliable connection for residents and businesses along the A59 corridor. For drivers, the bypass reduces the risk that a routine trip will be disrupted by unstable ground beneath the carriageway.
