How Articulated Tippers Work
Articulated tippers are large, multi-axle lorries designed to carry bulk materials. Their trailer is hinged to the tractor unit, allowing for greater load capacity and improved manoeuvrability. Compared to standard 8-wheeled vehicles, they hold more than 35% extra payload per trip.
The vehicle’s tipping body is fitted with safety features, including an inclinometer that prevents tipping on slopes over four degrees. The tractor must be fully aligned with the trailer before tipping starts, ensuring stability during unloading.
Additional protections include overhead cable detectors to avoid contact with power lines and raised body alarms that alert if the vehicle moves while the tipper body is elevated. These reduce risks to drivers, site staff, and infrastructure.
Where They Fit in UK Projects
Articulated tippers are increasingly common on major UK infrastructure sites such as motorway upgrades and large-scale civil engineering works. Their higher capacity means fewer trips on busy carriageways and slip roads, reducing congestion and vehicle interactions on the public highway.
