WJ applied 22,000 metres of Weatherline Ultra road markings along the A30 between Roseworthy and Hayle, following a full resurfacing of the route. The weatherproof system uses high-performance glass beads that improve visibility by reflecting light back to drivers, even in wet conditions.
Weatherline Ultra’s wet night visibility and tactile feedback
The Weatherline Ultra system is a Type 2 road marking solution designed to perform well during wet nights. It features a profiled dotted pattern, with raised dots that sit above surface water and reflect light back to drivers, rather than letting it scatter in standing water. This also creates subtle audible and tactile feedback for drivers crossing the lines. This feature is valuable on the A30, a high-speed, mostly unlit dual carriageway.
Durable detailing and skid resistance
Hand-applied symbols and other localised markings used methyl methacrylate (MMA), known for its durability. Sections requiring extra skid resistance received cold-applied high-friction surfacing to improve traction, particularly under wet conditions.
2,420 Allux road studs add lane guidance and durability
To enhance lane guidance, especially at night and in poor weather, WJ installed 2,420 Allux road studs along the A30. These studs are made in the UK from marine-grade recycled aluminium using high-pressure die casting, designed to withstand heavy traffic and long service lives.
Each stud has a stabilising shaft and secure lens system that keeps it firmly fixed. The borehole diameter is 32 mm, reducing the amount of pavement removed and lowering the risk of defects around each fixing.
Adapting to weather challenges on site
Persistent wet weather affected some of the MMA handwork during the programme. WJ collaborated with National Highways to review materials and select alternatives better suited to the conditions. This approach helped maintain the project schedule while meeting performance requirements.
Long-term savings and carbon reduction
The Weatherline Ultra system offers initial dry night retro-reflectivity consistently above 500 mcd/lx/m², wet night values above 75 mcd/lx/m², and daytime performance rated at Q4. It is designed to last up to 10 years, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and lane closures.
The product uses a low-carbon biogenic binder technology that cut emissions by 40.53 tonnes of CO2 equivalent compared to traditional thermoplastics. This represents a 61% reduction for the A30 scheme, aligning with National Highways’ sustainability targets.
Practical benefits on the strategic road network
WJ’s CEO Wayne Johnston stated the project shows how long-life marking systems and quality road studs improve safety and reduce whole life costs on busy routes. The combined use of Weatherline Ultra and Allux studs enhances visibility and lane guidance, benefitting drivers and maintenance crews alike.
